Chase Sequence
NarrativeMy "Chase" sequence follows the story of a male sloth in pursuit of female sloth. This idea came to me because of my love of subversive humour, hence, I almost wanted to rebel against the set project brief in order to have a more memorable narrative.
The chase deals with reality versus perception and how love is always more intense to the individuals involved than it is to outsiders looking in. In a way, I wanted to use sloths to portray the simplicity of human sexual attraction (supported by the audio) and to parody the notion of 'love at first sight'. It plays with Laura Mulvey's theory of the 'male gaze' and objectifies the female body. I tried to switch the audience's perspective from the male sloth's to the female sloth's in order to provide a more Feminist moral, implying that women are more aware of the 'chase' game than society accepts. |
Art & AnimationOn this project I enjoyed the design process the most and I feel my talent lies most in art direction. I feel the most successful aspects of the sequence are the colour palettes (particularly the stylised backgrounds versus the male sloth's colouration) and the character designs. I wanted to go for a quirky narrative with equally unusual characters. The art style of the characters change in order to support the movement from 'reality' to 'perceived reality'.
Overall I think the animation could have been more dynamic in its use of angles and its pacing. I didn't feel confident enough in my animation and figure drawing to execute more challenging movements. However, I think as a whole the art style is cohesive and feeds into the comedic intentions of the story. |

Action Analysis - Quadruped & Flight
These are some fairly rough action analysis tests done in TV Paint. I used footage of animals to break down the quadruped movement and a bird in flight. I am pleased with how these tests capture the action intended and I used particularly the sloth to aid my chase sequence.

Group Character Design Project
Made by Lewis Furber, Claudine Yuson, Matt Thomas and I as a part of the character design workshop.
This project was helpful in simplifying the process of making a narrative and distinct characters built with basic shapes.

How To Survive a Long Haul Flight
(Madi Maha, Dasha Kruglyakova & Amie Holmes)
My role in our 'How to' project was vastly inbetweening along with editing, and input into character design in the early stages of conception. Dasha hand drew all of the key frames and took on the task of inbetweening the more complicated scenes such as Sid (our character) falling back into his chair.
As a team we had issues with time management and work load distribution. Hand drawn animation was an enjoyable yet tedious process that we chose to use because of our team's limited experience in 2D software. Overall, I think the project works well in conveying our story, but the line work could have been neater and the film looks unfinished due to its lack of backgrounds and colour. |
Walk Cycles |
|
This is my 1st attempt at a walk cycle, using Flash. The rough red animatic beneath the darker lines, I feel, are actually better at demonstrating movement than the "cleaned up" lines. The foot also seems to flick up at the end which I didn't notice when animating.

Flipbooks
|
|
I found flipbooks to be one of the more fun projects we were set, as well as the most satisfying. I shot my flipbooks in twos because I thought the pacing was too fast when shot in singles. The most successful part I feel is the various speeds of the boucing ball at the beginning of the first flipbook.
Gifs
My favourite gif I made was the cloud crying, being consoled by the sun (though I've heard less innocent interpretations of it...). What makes it work visually is the textures I created from the brushes for the cloud, in contrast to the soft lowered opacity of the sun and other elements. I think the boil I created also makes the cloud look more alive and almost as if he is breathing as he sobs.
I think the star gif could use with more work because it's a bit too quick and the painted texture against the black background looks slightly odd.
